May Update: Coed Coexist - Plas Glyn y Weddw

This month marks the opening of a very special group exhibition that I’m proud to be part of.
In January 2024, a storm caused huge damage to the woodland surrounding Plas Glyn-y-Weddw. Among the trees lost was a magnificent beech tree that had stood for around 150–200 years, shaped over generations by the strong coastal winds and weather of the Llŷn Peninsula.
Following the storm, a group of artists came together to give the fallen tree a new life through creativity. Sections of the wood were shared between artists across Pen Llŷn and Gwynedd, with each person creating a piece of work in their own style and interpretation. The idea was to honour the tree, while bringing all the artworks back together to be exhibited in the place where the tree once stood.
It will be incredible to see the variety of creative responses on display at Y Plas, and to experience how differently each artist has connected with the same material.
Coed Coexist is a project created by Junko Mori and John Egan in partnership with Plas Glyn-y-Weddw. The project began with a symposium in September 2024 and explores our relationship with trees, woodlands, community, creativity and environmental care.
After the symposium, artists and creative practitioners connected to Pen Llŷn and the wider Gwynedd area were invited to collect pieces of the fallen beech tree and create new work for the exhibition. The tree became both a symbolic and physical centre of the project, continuing its story through the artworks created from it.
The Coed Coexist exhibition runs from May to July 2026, celebrating the local landscape, creativity and communities of Pen Llŷn.
My piece - Egin ar ôl Mudlosgi
My own work was inspired by traditional agricultural wool carding tools, which were historically used in the area to prepare sheep’s wool before weaving. Coming from an agricultural background myself, objects like these naturally inspire me and help me feel connected to the local area and its history.
The title of the piece comes from the idea that so many new things will grow from this project — new connections, conversations and future collaborations. From the unfortunate event of the tree falling, many other creative ideas and opportunities will continue to flourish.
